<p><strong>The Bad: </strong>Torque steer can be intimidating, uncooperative shifter.</p>
<p><strong>The Verdict:</strong> A sports car for the poor &#8211; with room for four.</p>
<p>When arranging for us to test the Mazdaspeed 3, the Mazda PR representative seemed almost a little contrite about our opinion of the regular Mazda3 we reviewed last August. “I hope it finds your favor better than the Mazda3 did,” he remarked in an email.</p>
<p>We were a little puzzled. After all, it wasn’t that we disliked the 3; it was a playful little economy car, even if it was laden with malapropos features like heated leather seats and xenon headlamps that turned with the front wheels. It was just awfully pricey &#8211; $24,455 is a lot to pay for a compact car.</p>
<p>But if they were concerned we were going to be harsh on the Mazdaspeed3 for the same reasons we took the regular 3 to task for…no worries, Mazda. Because the Speed 3 is not an overpriced compact car. It’s a vastly underpriced sports sedan.</p>

<p>Like any good sports car, the Speed 3’s greatness ultimately boils down to two factors: the engine and the suspension. And this engine is a doozy – a 2.3-liter inline four-cylinder with a hefty turbocharger bolted to it, pumping the little engine up to 263 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque. Given the car weighs a mere 3,221 pounds dry, this adds up to some serious <em>whee</em>!</p>
<p>But unlike most cars with this much power, the Mazda directs all that power to the road through the front wheels, and the front wheels alone. When so much power is directed through the same wheels being used to aim the car, it results in torque steer – when the force of the engine is strong enough to tug the car off course. In most front-wheel-drive cars, the condition is too slight to be noticed – but in the Speed 3, it’s as subtle as the latest Roland Emmerich film.</p>
<p>Mazda’s official line is the torque steer adds to the car’s fun factor, and while I certainly wouldn’t want the front wheels doubling as the drive axle on most performance cars…I gotta agree with the good folks at Mazda. It <em>is</em> pretty damn fun – once you get used to combating the wrenching wheels. (Though extensive driving may lead to the development of Popeye-like forearms.)</p>
<p>But the torque steer wouldn’t be much fun if the car didn’t blitz off the line like Reggie Bush. (And yes, I know that <em>defensive</em> players blitz, while Reggie is an <em>offensive</em> player.)</p>

<p>Sorry about that. The point being, this little sucker is fast. Given a twenty-foot gap to accelerate between the stop sign and the angry traffic of the FDR Drive, I revved up the engine, dumped the clutch – and wasn’t entirely sure I hadn’t been rear-ended by a Super Duty.</p>
<p>Having the turbo on your side means you’ve got power pretty much whenever you want it. Turbo lag is just apparent enough to be noticeable, without giving you the sort of hyperdrive effect seen on such cars as the old Porsche 930. By highway speeds, the tight-ratio six-speed manual gearbox has the engine spinning fast enough to make passing power available <em>right frikkin’ now</em> – and that’s just a safety feature, dude.</p>
<p>As for that stick shift – while I have to award major props to Mazda for only offering the Speed 3 with a manual transmission, the tranny itself does have a couple flaws. While running the engine at higher RPM on the highway is great for keeping the turbo in play, it doesn’t do much for fuel economy. And sixth gear is located awkwardly far down and to the right; several times I tried to upshift from fifth gear only to be shunted back into fourth. A firm hand is required to enable top gear.</p>
<p>As for the car’s handling, the suspension and tires don’t let the promise of that ballsy engine down. The Speed 3 romps around corners with glee; from the first turn you take, it’s apparent the car wants to be driven hard. Steering feel is a bit heavy at lower speeds; however, it loosens up as velocity increases, and while it may not be the most communicative steering rack out there, it’s not really complaint-worthy, either.</p>

<p>Thankfully, Mazda managed to find a pleasant balance between sporty and ridiculous in the car’s styling. While some automakers tend to slap all sorts of gaudy accoutrements on their sporty low-priced models, Mazda was content to leave the already wild-looking 3 more or less alone. The biggest difference can be seen up front, where the Speed 3 boasts a deep hood scoop and a gill-like guard on the front air intake that only plays up the regular 3’s marine life resemblance.</p>
<p>In addition, the Speed 3 only comes in 5-door hatchback form, which prevents it from suffering from the odd-looking pinched rear common to the sedan version of the 3. Be it in regular or speedy form, the hatch is by far the more coherently styled of the Mazda3 lineup.</p>
<p>Inside, things remain pretty similar to the conventional 3. The seats, while cloth instead of leather, are just as comfortable as the bovine thrones in the Grand Touring edition we tested several months ago. The only real differences are a handful of little touches – red trim on the seats and shifter, and a small electronic boost gauge between the tach and speedometer to tell you how much exhaust the turbo is forcing back into the engine.</p>

<p>As for options, the Speed 3 forgoes many of the fancy options hoisted on our last high-end tester – and is little the worse for wear. My tester was equipped with the only big-ticket item on the options list: the $1,895 Tech Package, which adds a 10-speaker Bose stereo with 6-disc CD changer and satellite radio, a keyless entry system allowing the driver to lock, unlock or start the car without removing the key from his or her pocket, and a navigation system.</p>
<p>About that navigation system…well, it’s not the greatest factory guidance system out there. The screen is conveniently mounted high on the dash, close to the driver’s eyeline; however, it’s about the size of a Triscuit. The only way to control the system is via small buttons on the steering wheel, meaning the driver can’t delegate programming duties to a passenger. Plus, while the computer claimed to automatically dim the screen at night, it failed to do so in my car – forcing me to drive around with a blindingly bright square of light in my eyeline. Ultimately, I had to pull over and manually switch it over to night mode – and switch it back and forth every twelve hours or so.</p>
<p>Still, for all its faults, the navigation system did seem as though it had been put together for people who love to drive. While heading back to New York City from Pennylvania’s Bucks County late one night, the system pointed me down a series of increasingly smaller and windier rural New Jersey roads instead of sending me straight to the four-lane highway I’d taken on the way down. I don’t think the back roads were any quicker – but they were certainly more fun.</p>
<p><strong> </strong></p>
<p><strong>The Bottom Line:</strong></p>
<p>Even in this day and age, when automakers are making 550-horsepower sport-utilities and muscle cars roam the streets once more, the Mazdaspeed 3’s combination of performance, frugality and usability stands out. For less than $24,000, Mazda has created a car that can seat four adults or carry a good amount of cargo while performing like an honest-to-God sports car.</p>
<p>This is the kind of car that reminds people who love to drive where that love comes from. It was in pursuit of cars like this that led me to start College Cars Online – affordable, fun cars suited for young people. If we awarded a College Cars Online Car Of The Year (we’re not – but stay tuned for next year), the Mazdaspeed 3 would be at the head of the pack.</p>

So you&#8217;ll excuse us if we occasionally pause to scream our heads off.</p>
<p>Our first gift this holiday season, however, comes from the good folks at Lamborghini. According to company sources speaking to <a href="http://www.carsuk.net/lamborghini-urus-the-fx70-killer/" target="_blank">CarsUK.net</a>, Lambo is summoning up their very own hypercar capable of competing with the Ferrari Enzo and the rest of the highest echelon of automotive performance. Rumor has it the car, which will be based off the Murcielago-replacing Jota, will be named Urus, after the enormous primordial ancestor of modern cattle. (That&#8217;s not a joke.)</p>

<p>While the Jota&#8217;s suspected 700+ horsepower 6.0 liter V12 and carbon fiber/aluminum chassis mean it probably won&#8217;t be much of a slouch, the Urus should blow it away, thanks to intensive weight-reducing strategies and the introduction of an 800+ horsepower V12. Price hasn&#8217;t been announced, but if you&#8217;re hoping for less than half a million bucks, you&#8217;d be better off praying for JFK&#8217;s resurrection.</p>
<p>But while Lamborghini is trying to out-muscle Ferrari&#8217;s old hypercars, the folks in Maranello are working on something quite different. The company confirmed last month they are developing an electric-powered all-wheel-drive system for their future vehicles.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s right, folks. Not only will the Ferrari of Tomorrow have four-wheel-drive&#8230;it&#8217;ll be a <em>hybrid.</em></p>

We just wanted to look at it again.</p></div>
<p>Company insiders told <a href="http://www.autocar.co.uk/News/NewsArticle/Ferrari-612-Scaglietti/244533/" target="_blank">AutoCar</a> the system&#8217;s first use will be driving the front wheels of the company&#8217;s front-engined GTs, effectively giving each axle a separate powertrain &#8211; the electric motor up front, and a gasoline-powered V12 powering the rear. But the system is designed to improve handling and acceleration, not fuel economy &#8211; so we don&#8217;t have to worry about Ferrari drivers getting all smug or anything.</p>
<p>The system will probably first be used in the successor to the 612, which will probably be breaking cover sometime in the next year or two. Don&#8217;t expect to see any hybrid Ferraris on the streets until 2014 or so, which still sounds ridiculously futuristic whenever we think about it. When they do come, the hybrid system will probably add a hefty tithe to the Monroney &#8211; but if you can afford a four-seat Ferrari, you probably ain&#8217;t too worried about it.</p>
<p>Speaking of mansion-priced cars, Rolls-Royce is hoping to take the wraps off an electric version of its Phantom uber-sedan sometime in the next year or so, also according to <a href="http://www.autocar.co.uk/News/NewsArticle/Rolls-Royce-Phantom/245184/" target="_blank">AutoCar</a>. The Powers That Be at Rolls want to have the car on the road by 2012, in time for the London Olympics &#8211; which, entirely coincidentally, happen to be sponsored by Rolls-Royce&#8217;s parent company, BMW!</p>

<p>Rolls employees claim they aren&#8217;t particularly concerned about the added mass of the lithium-ion batteries needed to hold the car&#8217;s juice, as the conventional Phantom already pushes three tons. And while you could certainly argue a 6,000 pound sedan decorated with twenty-seven cows&#8217; worth of leather and more wood than a freshman class trip to the Playboy Mansion is hardly eco-friendly, don&#8217;t bother telling the electric Rolls&#8217; owners &#8211; because while they can certainly hear you, they just don&#8217;t care.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re in the market for a more modest luxury sedan, however, there&#8217;s no need to fret. BMW and Audi both have unveiled the newest members of their families in the last couple weeks &#8211; BMW brought out its new 5-series, while Audi rolled out the new A8.</p>
<p>First up: the 5, which continues BMW&#8217;s recent trend back towards more conventional styling. The &#8220;flame surfacing&#8221; of the Bangle years admittedly remains, but at least the front end no longer appears surprised and the rear no longer frustrated.</p>

<p>Here in the States, only two models will be available at launch &#8211; the 550i, powered by a 407-horsepower version of Bimmer&#8217;s blissful turbocharged 4.4-liter V8, and the 535i, which comes with the latest turbocharged, 306-horsepower version of the company&#8217;s equally sweet 3.0-liter inline six. The best-selling-yet-least-arousing 528i will arrive a couple months later; however, BMW makes up for it by boosting power to 258 horses and 228 lb-ft of torque &#8211; gains of 28 for both figures over the current models. ZF&#8217;s new eight-speed automatic comes standard on the 550i, and optional on the six-cylinder models.</p>

<p>After debating it over several rounds of drinks at the local bar, we here at CCO ultimately came down in favor of the new 5er&#8217;s looks. (Also, we unanimously agreed that &#8220;Livin&#8217; On A Prayer&#8221; is, like, the greatest song in human history.) While it seems almost a tad forgettable from certain angles (at least in pictures), it certainly bears a strong resemblance to the 3- and 7-series &#8211; and given that that was presumably the idea, it&#8217;s safe to call this one a success.</p>

<p>However, we aren&#8217;t particularly fond of the look of Audi&#8217;s new A8.  From the front, the car seems oddly reminiscent of the current Hyundai Sonata, and the LED running lights &#8211; which lend the A4/A5 family a futuristic strength, like the glowing eyes of Iron Man &#8211; angle down in just the wrong place, giving the A8 a strange resemblance to Droopy Dog. Audi is trumpeting the new A8 as the front line of its new designed theme, dubbed &#8220;Vorsprung durch Technik;&#8221; while our German is a little rusty, we can only assume said phrase translates to, &#8220;Let&#8217;s just make the A4 bigger and go pound a beer.&#8221;</p>

<p>Thankfully, though, the interior looks like all you&#8217;d expect and more from Audi&#8217;s most luxurious model. The design is beautiful, and while we&#8217;ve heard some mixed opinions on the Interwebs about the A8&#8217;s handlebar shifter, we rather like it. And considering that shifter connects to the same eight-speed automatic as in the 5-series &#8211; and that the transmission connects all four wheels to a 372-horsepower 4.2 liter V8 &#8211; the A8 ought to be a pretty sweet drive for such a large car.</p>

<p>Of course, if you&#8217;re not thrilled with the A8&#8217;s styling and are willing to sacrifice a bit of space for it, Audi will be more than willing to take a deposit on their upcoming A7 four-door-coupe. According to <a href="http://www.autocar.co.uk/News/NewsArticle/Audi-Concepts/245408/" target="_blank">AutoCar</a>, the long-rumored A6-based pseudo-coupe will be unveiled at the Moscow Auto Show in August 2010.</p>
<p>When the A7 hits the U.S. streets sometime in late 2010 or early 2011 to engage the Mercedes-Benz CLS and BMW X6 in a Teutonic battle of &#8220;Bizarro-world coupes,&#8221; expect it to come equipped with similar engines to the A6 &#8211; naturally aspirated and supercharged V-6s, and if Audi&#8217;s feeling generous and gas is still cheap, the 372-hp V8 from the A8. According to Audi design director Stefan Sielaff, there will even be an S7 &#8211; likely featuring a turbo/supercharged V8 &#8211; for those of you who like testing the patience of law enforcement.</p>

<p>Rumor has it U.S. prices should start somewhere around $46,000, but since the A6 starts at $45,200, we wouldn&#8217;t be surprised to see the A7 on the painful side of $50K when it hits our shores. Mercedes and BMW both charge significantly more for their faux coupes than the sedans/SUVs they&#8217;re based on, so Audi will probably follow the same logic &#8211; even if AutoCar claims there will only be a &#8220;small price premium.&#8221;</p>
<p>But while Audi is chopping up the higher end of the luxury car market into ever-smaller slices, BMW wants to slot yet another model into its rapidly burgeoning M line. According to <a href="http://www.autocar.co.uk/News/NewsArticle/BMW-1-Series/244598/#" target="_blank">AutoCar</a> (who seem to have more anonymous sources than Seymour Hersh), someone in BMW&#8217;s high-performance division claims creating a more affordable model to slot in under the M3 is a top priority.</p>

<p>Details are few and far between at this point, but since the car would be based on the next-gen 1-series, there&#8217;s plenty of time for info to leak out. However, we do know two things: the car will (hopefully) be priced in the mid-$40K range, and BMW may dust off the old M1 badge for it. We&#8217;ve got our fingers crossed for a 365+ horsepower version of the company&#8217;s turbo I6 under the hood&#8230;</p>
<p>Of course, if Audi and BMW are hard at work crafting fun new toys for us to play with, the good folks at Mercedes-Benz can&#8217;t be far behind. In this case, rumor has it the company is working on whipping up a smaller sports car based on the new SLS.</p>

<p>According to <a href="http://www.pistonheads.com/news/default.asp?storyId=20971" target="_blank">PistonHeads</a>, the new model would be designed to compete against the Porsche 911. The &#8216;Heads claim the follow-up to the SLS &#8211; can we call it the SaLT? &#8211; will use a V8 of somewhere between 5.8 and 6.2 liters, complete with cylinder cut-off. Given that AMG spent a shit-ton of cash developing its current 6.2 liter engine and said engine has proven suitable in everything from C-class compacts to R-class megawagons, it&#8217;s probably safe to assume the Salt will just use a revised version of that engine. Expect to see the finished product in about five years.</p>
<p>Finally, we have another piece of tragic supercar news to round out this update. After a year of service, the Italian State Police&#8217;s Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 was totaled a couple weeks ago near the northern city of Cremona. Thankfully, neither of the officers inside were injured when the Lambo swerved to avoid a car and slammed into a group of parked vehicles.</p>

<p>Before the accident, the Gallardo was primarily used to provide rapid response to accidents and for high-speed organ transport &#8211; because while a helicopter might be faster, the doctors wouldn&#8217;t be able to say, &#8220;They&#8217;re driving your new heart here in a Lamborghini.&#8221; No word yet on whether Lamborghini will replace the vehicle, but here&#8217;s hoping they will. In fact, here&#8217;s hoping automakers here in the States decide to follow suit and donate some choice vehicles to our local police forces. <p>According to Volvo, angsty <span style="text-decoration:line-through;">douchebag</span> vampire Edward Cullen, of Stephanie Meyer&#8217;s<span style="text-decoration:line-through;"> stupefyingly poorly written</span> best-selling <em>Twilight</em> series, is the ideal Volvo owner. As such, in the upcoming <span style="text-decoration:line-through;">future Razzie-nominated</span> blockbuster adaptation of <em>New Moon</em>, Edward (bet he hates it when you call him Eddie) will be driving a Volvo XC60 sport-utility vehicle.</p>
<p>Yes, folks, you read that right. A passive-aggressive, pasty, teenage bloodsucker is the exact sort of person Volvo cars wants to be identified with.</p>

(Dude, if she wants to be a vampire, let her be a vampire! Especially since &#8220;being a vampire&#8221; is no different than &#8220;being Clark Kent on <em>Smallville,&#8221; </em>except your skin sparkles.)</p>
<p>A vapid, two-dimensional creation from the masturbatory fantasies of a middle-aged Mormon mother who never so much as wrote a short story before drafting a cliched, anti-feminist, conservative piece of  drivel that, despite demonstrating the same level of writing skill as slightly-better-than-average <em>Supernatural</em> fan fiction, became a series of novels that spent almost <em>two whole years</em> atop the<em> New York Times</em> bestseller list, causing <a href="http://www.nealbailey.com/" target="_blank">far superior writers</a> who have been questing quixotically for years for a mere modimicum of her success to debate whether the Colt .45 they reach for should be in malt liquor or firearm form.</p>
<p>Volvo claims Eddie identifies well with their vehicles because he is &#8220;a nurturer&#8221; and cares about keeping the people he loves safe, while still seeking something good-looking. (After all, he is not-banging Kristen Stewart.) I say, emasculated bipolar monster , nurturer &#8211; po-<em>tay</em>-to, po-<em>tot</em>-o.</p>

You think Eddie Cullen has as much Swedish heritage in his corrupted veins as The Mighty Thor does?</p>
<p>(And don&#8217;t give me that &#8220;Edward&#8217;s pale enough to be Swedish&#8221; shit, cause I ain&#8217;t buying it. He&#8217;s a vampire. If he was one bit Norwegian, he&#8217;d be living up there from October to March. I read <em>30 Days Of Night.</em> I know how vampires think.)</p>
<p>There&#8217;s a <em>Thor</em> movie headed for theaters in 2011. Maybe Saab will be smart enough to snap up the sponsorship rights to that one. I can see it now: &#8220;My evil half-brother Loki has stolen Mjolnir, robbing me of my ability to fly! Quick &#8211; into that Saab 9-5! We might not catch him &#8211; but with a turbocharged engine, we&#8217;ve got half a chance!&#8221;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><br /><p>Here at College Cars Online, we pride ourselves on bringing our Dear Readers (that&#8217;d be you) the most interesting automotive news, information and reviews in our own definitive style. As part of that commitment to you, we&#8217;d like to take a minute to let you know about some of the exciting events coming down the line in the near future.</p>
<p>The biggest news is &#8211; we&#8217;re moving! Well, not physically. Our butts will remain glued to the same office chairs they always have, here in the office. But in the next couple of weeks, we&#8217;ll be transitioning from our current WordPress.com address to the one we&#8217;ve been lusting after all along &#8211; <a href="http://www.collegecarsonline.com" target="_blank">http://www.collegecarsonline.com.</a></p>
<p>Now, it&#8217;s not ready as of this posting, so if you head there you won&#8217;t see anything yet. But within the next couple weeks, we&#8217;ll be mating our BRAND NEW WEBSITE to said address, so you can add that bookmark already.</p>
<p>As for our BRAND NEW WEBSITE, we&#8217;re going to be using Squarespace instead of WordPress, so things will be shifting around a bit. We haven&#8217;t settled on a final format yet, but rest assured, it&#8217;ll be pretty sweet. As George Foreman used to say, &#8220;I guarantee it!&#8221;</p>
<p>Secondly, we&#8217;ve got several more reviews coming down the pipe. This week, we&#8217;ve got an Arrest-Me-Red Mazdaspeed 3 sitting in our garage; in a couple of weeks, we&#8217;ll be driving the Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart Sportback, then over the holidays we&#8217;ll be kicking snow and taking names in an Audi S4. We&#8217;ll also be reviewing the popular car-sharing service Zipcar, to see how it stands up to owning or renting a car; that&#8217;ll be coming along in the next few weeks as well.</p>
<p>We&#8217;re also going to try to convince you to follow our Twitter feed, <a href="http://twitter.com/collegecars" target="_blank">@collegecars</a>, by offering real-time posts while testing out our vehicles. (Okay, we won&#8217;t be Tweeting while driving, because that&#8217;s just stupid. We&#8217;ll park first, then Tweet &#8211; and so should you. Don&#8217;t Tweet and Drive!)</p>

<p>Our top story of this installment: after years and <em>years</em> and YEARS of teasing, Toyota has finally unveiled Lexus&#8217;s first supercar. Called the LFA, the  supercar is a clean-sheet design with a front-mounted 4.8-liter V10 that spits out 552 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque. With the help of a six-speed sequential manual gearbox, Toyota claims the car dashes from 0 to 60 in 3.5 seconds before topping out at 202 miles per hour.</p>

<p>If it sounds to you like the LFA will line up pretty squarely against the Ferrari 458 Italia, congratulations, you know enough about sports cars to make up for your Archie comics collection. However, there&#8217;s a catch &#8211; the Ferrari is significantly cheaper than Toyota&#8217;s latest ride. (And there&#8217;s a sentence I never thought I&#8217;d write.)</p>

<p>Yes, the LFA can be yours for not a Benjamin less than $375,000 &#8211; at least $100,000 than the 458 will likely cost here in the States. And while the Lexus is pretty cool, it&#8217;s hard to imagine many rich car enthusiasts would pick the uglier, more expensive LFA over the latest addition to Ferrari&#8217;s stable. Of course, most of them won&#8217;t have to &#8211; in this price range, if you can buy one, you can probably buy both.</p>
<p>But Toyota isn&#8217;t the only Japanese manufacturer with big performance news. According to <em>AutoCar</em>, the next-generation Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution will be powered by a plug-in hybrid powertrain similar to that of the company&#8217;s PX-MiEV concept from this year&#8217;s Tokyo Motor Show. The PX-MiEV, which sounds like a bad hand of Scrabble, has two electric motors powering all four wheels;  a 1.6 liter four-cylinder engine pulls double-duty, both generating power for the battery and powering the front driveshaft.</p>

<p>Now, we here at CCO aren&#8217;t quite sure how Mitsubishi intends to pull this off. Even if they can drastically cut the Evo&#8217;s weight (which would be difficult to do while adding all the new tech), the car will still need at least 250 horsepower in order to maintain its performance credentials. But that&#8217;s 250 horsepower <em>all the time</em>. Not, 250 horsepower until the battery runs out of initial charge, then 100 horsepower while the gas motor recharges it. Then again, the next-gen Evo isn&#8217;t due until 2013, so they have time to sort it out.</p>
<p>Speaking of potentially stupid ideas, Porsche recently announced they would be willing to share both the Panamera and, more frighteningly, the 911 architecture with their new corporate masters, the Volkswagen Group. We&#8217;re not sure if this is Volkswagen exacting punishment for Porsche&#8217;s earlier attempt to conquer the VW Group (super-short refresher: Porsche AG tried to take over the VW group in 2007, but it fell through &#8211; so the VW group proceeded to take over Porsche, instead), but using the 911 platform for anything other than Porsche 911s just seems blasphemous.</p>

<p>Of course, it&#8217;s unlikely VW will ever use the 911&#8217;s underpinnings for anything else, since the demand for rear-engined sports cars is pretty slim. Porsche has only managed to perfect the form after 40-plus years of refinement; if it weren&#8217;t for the 911&#8217;s immense heritage, they likely would have dumped the car in favor of a bigger version of the mid-engined Boxster years ago. (That said, don&#8217;t be surprised to see the next-gen Boxster/Cayman sharing a platform with Audi&#8217;s R4 roadster&#8230;)</p>
<p>In other German car news, prototypes of BMW&#8217;s next-generation 5-series have been spotted prowling around Deutschland. Clad in BMW&#8217;s groovy camouflage designed to confuse camera lenses and attract aging hippies, the new 5 looks to us like a cross between the new 7-series and the most recent 3-series &#8211; which is probably what they were aiming for. Once the acid trip stickers wear off (hah!), expect a more conventionally attractive sedan than the current 5.</p>

<p>Expect the same inline six-cylinder engines from today&#8217;s lineup, but the 360-hp V8 of the current BMW 550i will be supplanted with the oh-so-sweet turbocharged 4.4-liter, 400-hp V8 from the 750i and X6. Rumor has it the next M5 will come with a similar turbocharged V8 pumping out around 550 horsepower, connected to a 7-speed dual clutch gearbox &#8211; and the line for that sonofabitch forms behind <em>me</em>, so stop cutting.</p>
<p>On the complete other end of the performance spectrum, Nissan pulled the wraps off the production version of their Leaf electric car last week at the Tokyo Auto Show. To dust off the old SAT-style analogy format, Leaf:Nissan::Volt:General Motors, and if you can&#8217;t figure that out, well, you probably shouldn&#8217;t be reading &#8220;College&#8221; Cars Online.</p>

<p>Nissan claims the Leaf offers all the convenience and range necessary to wean the majority of automobile users (at least those in First-World Countries &#8211; sorry, anybody who&#8217;s name ends in -stan) off the internal combustion engine. With a 100-mile range, 107 horsepower, a top speed of 87 mph and a pricetag of around $25,000, we&#8217;ll probably be seeing quite a few Leafs (Leaves?) on our roads soon.</p>
<p>Nissan claims recharging on a 200V outlet takes 8 hours, which is all kinds of helpful, considering pretty much every electrical appliance in the U.S. operates on either a 120V or 240V circuit. Figure around 8 hours on a heavy-duty 240V outlet, whereas if you&#8217;re plugging into the same 120V outlet your iPhone uses, you might as well just walk wherever you&#8217;re going.</p>
<p>I don&#8217;t really have any creative segue for this next story, since it sort of goes directly in opposition to the point of this site, so let&#8217;s just dive right in and avoid this awkward moment. According to the omnipresent J.D. Power and Associates, Generation Y doesn&#8217;t care as much about automobiles as they used to. After the Big Brother-ish group tracked thousands of conversations on Facebook and Twitter over an eight-month period (um, creepy), they determined teens and &#8220;early careerists&#8221; &#8211; 12-to-18-year-olds and  22-to-29-year-olds, respectively, because college students don&#8217;t matter &#8211; showed &#8220;shifts in perception regarding the necessity of and desire to have cars.&#8221;</p>
<p>The Power Co. goes on to posit that either the recession has left America&#8217;s youth with less cash to spend on cars, or that social media has replaced face-to-face interaction to such a degree we no longer feel the need to meet up in person as much. If number two is correct, then God help us all.</p>

<p>Finally, a moment of silence, please, for the passing of a legend. Land Rover has announced that after six decades on the market, the Defender will be retired in 2013. While the Defender proved itself capable of conquering the worst nature could throw at it, there was one foe it proved unable to defeat: government regulations.</p>

<p>Thanks to new European emissions and pedestrian-safety regulations, an all-new or heavily revised replacement will be required for the aging yet capable SUV. While the Defender hasn&#8217;t been sold in the U.S. for quite some time, your editor will always have fond memories of clambering up a seemingly impassible trail in the Vermont woods in a Defender 90.</p>
<p>However, Land Rover claims the replacement will be more versatile and more practical. If that means it&#8217;ll be just as capable and can come back to the States, well &#8211; <em>the king is dead, long live the king!</em></p>

<p>And for all you competitive folks, it even tells you at the end how reduced your reaction times were while texting and compares your results to the rest of the test-takers. When I tried it, the average player took 0.24 seconds longer to react while texting &#8211; but I was only reduced by 0.03 seconds, so suck it, average NYTimes.com reader!</p>
<p>This, of course, comes on the wake of a <em>Car and Driver</em> story from June 2009 in which the esteemed magazine (which is sort of like <em>The New York Times</em> of auto journalism, actually. Coincidence?) tested the reflexes of their 37-year-old editor-in-chief Eddie Alterman (give me a job, Eddie!) and a 22-year-old web intern, Jordan Brown while texting &#8211; then compared those times to the participants&#8217; reaction times while drunk.</p>
<p>Interestingly, both subjects reported better reflexes while drunk than while texting. Sadly, no drunk texting was performed, at least during the instrumented portion of the test. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><br /><p>While walking today, I stumbled upon a brand spankin&#8217; new Porsche Panamera 4S parked outside Manhattan Motorcars here in New York City. They also had one inside; unfortunately, I wasn&#8217;t able to swing in and take a look at it, but I was able to snap off a few pix from my iPhone of the model parked on the street.</p>
<p>For the record, the Panamera went on sale here in the States last Saturday. I haven&#8217;t driven one yet (come on, Porsche, come through for me!) but from what I&#8217;m hearing, it&#8217;s a world-class effort for their first sedan.</p>
<p>And it looks much, much better in person than it does in pictures.</p>

<p>Let&#8217;s start off with something sexy. Over the last couple of weeks, no fewer than three boner-inducing artist&#8217;s concepts have appeared for potential supercars from some of the world&#8217;s foremost makers of excitiong cars. Now, unfortunately, none of these are anywhere near cleared for production &#8211; they&#8217;re just artistic visions of potential supercars. But at least we can imagine ourselves in them &#8211; which is all most of us would be doing if they were real, anyway.</p>
<p>First up is a concept for a successor to the former fastest car in the world, the McLaren F1. McLaren recently unveiled their first all-new car since the F1; named the MP4-12C, it&#8217;s designed to fight in the highly competitive supercar middleweight category, against such Worthy Opponents as the Ferrari 458 Italia, the Porsche 911 Turbo/GT2, the Audi R8 5.2, the successor to the Lamborghini Gallardo, and Stephen Colbert.</p>
<p>McLaren has stated the MP4-12C (which sounds more like a submachine gun than a car to us) will occupy the middle of their three-supercar lineup, leaving room above and below it. With that in mind, Coventry University student Matt Williams whipped up this concept called the LM5, a hypercar to fit above the MP4 and challenge the Bugatti Veyron for global supremacy. (Imaginary power comes from a 700-horsepower version of the BMW M5&#8217;s V10.)</p>

<p>Next up comes a design for a potential Porsche supercar to succeed the Carrera GT of a few years ago. Crafted by an Iranian designer named Emil Baddal, this exotic-looking machine currently goes without any imaginary powertrain at all. (It also goes without a name, so I guess Baddal is one of those artists who likes to title his works &#8220;Untitled&#8221; because he thinks it&#8217;s avant-garde.)</p>
<p>Since Baddal apparently wants to leave the details up to the imagination, I&#8217;m going to call it the &#8220;Rapier,&#8221; after the runner-up name for the F-22 fighter, and pretend it&#8217;s powered by a 745-horsepower 6.8 liter turbocharged V12 based off the Panamera&#8217;s V8, connected to an all-wheel-drive system by a seven-speed PDK transmission. Then I will pretend to drive it across the country to Jennifer Aniston&#8217;s house and take her out for a fancy dinner before parking on Mulholland Drive and getting busy on the hood.</p>

<p>Baddal also brings us the third in our list of imaginary playthings, a real-life version of the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics concept from this year&#8217;s Frankfurt show. That concept was &#8220;propelled&#8221; by a 163-horsepower turbodiesel 1.5 liter three cylinder connected to a pair of electric motors; sources claim the production version, rumored to go by &#8220;Z10,&#8221; would run a 450-horsepower twin-turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine (also rumored to be the engine of the next M3). Combined with a low curb weight, the Z10 ought to be as ballsy as a triple shout of Jåger.</p>

<p>But enough fiction. If you&#8217;ve been following this site for a while, you&#8217;ve probably read our posts on the &#8220;Toyobaru,&#8221; the sport coupe under joint development by Toyota and Subaru. Well, the wraps have finally come off, and it looks pretty sweet.</p>

<p>Currently going by the name of the Toyota FT-86 Concept (excitement fail), the car is powered by Subaru&#8217;s 2.0 liter boxer four-cylinder engine, hopefully putting out at least 200 horsepower. Supposedly, the car will be rear-wheel-drive only; whether that&#8217;ll preclude it being sold as a Subaru in the States remains to be seen, but I wouldn&#8217;t be surprised to see an AWD system slung under there for the U.S. market.</p>
<p>The production FT-86 will reportedly be coming our way in 2011, hopefully priced around $20,000. RWD or AWD, it looks like it&#8217;ll be a great car &#8211; it&#8217;s about time manufacturers started making more small, fun cars for less money.</p>

<p>Vying for the FT-86&#8217;s recession-paralyzed youth, though, will be a similarly priced sports coupe from Honda &#8211; and it&#8217;s a hybrid, which scores you bonus points but means you have to scrape Ed Begley Jr. off your car more often. (He&#8217;s like a starfish!)</p>

<p>Successor to the beloved CR-X hatch of eons ago, the CR-Z (I guess CR-Y just sounded too sad) will <em>only</em> pack a hybrid powerplant, so don&#8217;t expect many smoky burnouts. Rumor has it the powertrain will be a 1.5 liter four-cylinder connected to Honda&#8217;s usual hybrid gear and your choice of six-speed stick or CVT automatic; expect somewhere around 125-150 combined horsepower, a 0-60 time of around seven seconds, and moderate-to-heavy smug levels.</p>

<p>But there&#8217;s more news from Subie-land these days &#8211; and this next tidbit is a bit&#8230;unexpected. Apparently, <em>Motor Trend</em> has named the 2010 Subaru Outback its SUV of the Year. To which we at CCO respond&#8230;<em>really?</em></p>

<p>As readers know, we really like Subarus. They&#8217;ve been making tremendous strides in quality without sacrificing their core values, and remain some of the best cars in their price range. And the Outback, with its elevated stance and versatile AWD, does offer most of the ability of a sport-ute while retaining most of the virtues of a car.</p>
<p>But that&#8217;s because <em>it is a car</em>.</p>
<p>Now, I&#8217;m sure <em>Motor Trend</em> will say the line between cars and SUVs is blurrier than ever, and that the newest Outback features enough differences from the regular Legacy that it should qualify as a separate category.  Sorry, MT. We love ya, but the Outback is a car. To paraphrase our well-spoken president, you can put all the lipstick you want on a pig, but she&#8217;s still Sarah Palin &#8211; and you can put all the off-road trappings you want on a car, but it&#8217;s still a station wagon. In our minds, the winner should have been the Audi Q5.</p>
<p>Speaking of Audi, some good news from our friends in Ingolstadt. According to <em>AutoExpress</em>, Audi will be bringing the electric e-tron concept from the Frankfurt show to production as a new smaller sports car called the R4.</p>

<p>Reportedly, the R4 will be based on the production version of VW&#8217;s Concept BlueSport, a small diesel-powered roadster from this year&#8217;s Detroit show. No idea what sort of output we should expect from the production electric R4, but given that the concept&#8217;s 3,319 lb-ft of torque could probably fling the space shuttle into orbit, it&#8217;ll probably be a mite less when it lands on our shores around 2012. (There will likely also be gas-powered version, for those of us lucky enough to still have access to fossil fuels after the <span style="text-decoration:line-through;">zombiocalypse of 2011 </span>price of gas goes up.)</p>
<p>But if electric-powered sports cars aren&#8217;t your bag, how about a convertible Porsche Panamera? No, the Germans aren&#8217;t bringing back the four-door convertible. That&#8217;s not coming back until somebody goes back in time and saves JFK. But according to <em>Automotive News</em>, a topless two-door version of the Panamera will be hitting the streets sometime in the next couple of years. No word yet on whether they&#8217;ll also offer a two-door coupe version to combat the Mercedes-Benz CL and BMW 6-series, but given Porsche&#8217;s 928 filled a similar GT coupe role from 1978 to 1995, you&#8217;d probably be safe putting down a deposit&#8230;just in case.</p>

<p>Or, if you&#8217;d prefer something equally luxurious but a bit more <span style="text-decoration:line-through;">insane</span> sensible, <em>Automotive News</em> also says Aston Martin is considering putting its Toyota/Scion-based Cygnet runabout into production. For around $32,000, drivers could have an Aston Martin the size of a Smart car with the same Toyota suspension and drivetrain as the iQ upon which it&#8217;s based. Aston Martin engineers say they got the idea after watching Daniel Craig get whipped in the balls in<em> Casino Royale</em>.</p>

<p>Still, if you decide to spend your thirty-two grand on a Cygnet instead of, say, a Mustang GT, at the very least you&#8217;re less likely to see one of Chevrolet&#8217;s new Caprice police cars in your rear view mirror. For those of you who just exploded at the thought of a Chevy version of the wonderful Pontiac G8, sorry to burst your bubble, but the G8&#8217;s still marked for termination as of this writing.</p>

<p>Those of you who&#8217;re envisioning a four-door Camaro, though, are much closer to the mark &#8211; like the Camaro, the Caprice is based off GM&#8217;s Zeta platform. However, don&#8217;t get too caught up in dreams of drag-racing with the wife and kids; the Caprice will only be available to police here in the States. (It&#8217;s available for civilians in the Middle East, because apparently GM easily confuses that region with the Mid-West.)</p>
<p>Loaded with a 355-hp 6.0 liter V8 mated to a six-speed auto, the Caprice should run 0-60 in the mid five-second range while driving up police academy recruitment from Pennsylvania to Nevada. Expect to be checking your six for them in 2011; V6 powered versions will be available in 2012, but&#8230;why?</p>

<p>While automotive journalists and racing drivers alike often extol the virtues of closed-roof sports cars, there is simply no substitute for the experience of a convertible. Sure, chopping the roof may give up some structural integrity and motorized tops may add weight, but no amount of lightness or strength can replace the feeling of racing along with the wind in your hair, nothing between you and the sky. For most of us, driving a convertible is as close as we’ll ever come to flying.</p>
<p>That said, the Audi TT-S Roadster is a wonderful substitute for a jetpack.</p>

<p>Thankfully, little of the TT coupe’s clean, elegant styling is lost in the transformation from hardtop to softtop. The styling modifications baked in with the high-performance S package thankfully avoid the gaudiness all too often associated with “sportier” models; if anything, the front lip spoiler and raised wheel arches draw a strong link to Audi’s outstanding R8 supercar. And while “Brilliant Red” might not be the best choice for every car, it sat on the TT-S’s hull like the car was born to wear it. Put it this way &#8211; pull up in this car at a party, and you won&#8217;t have any trouble snaring some ass. And I don&#8217;t mean farm animals. (Unless that&#8217;s how you roll.)</p>
<p>The car’s expensive looks and feel are all the more impressive, given that under the skin, the TT-S is little more than a Volkswagen Rabbit (nee Golf), sharing its chassis (hence the car’s rather diminutive size) and engines – in the case of the TT-S, an uprated version of the GTI’s 2.0 liter turbocharged inline-four cranking out 265 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque.</p>
<p>All this juice is routed to all four wheels through the Volkswagen Group’s dual-clutch gearbox, formerly known as DSG but currently called S tronic. Whatever you call it, the dual-clutch box operates almost seamlessly. As with the dual clutch tranny of the <a href="http://collegecars.wordpress.com/2009/06/08/review-2009-mitsubishi-lancer-ralliart/" target="_blank">Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart</a>, the TT-S’s gearbox offers multiple ways of choosing your next gear.</p>
<p>Leave it in automatic, and it’ll shift itself without a second thought. Slap the shift lever sideways into Sport mode, and the car assumes you’re trying to recreate <em>Ronin</em>, holding gears close to the redline to keep the engine on the boil. And if you prefer manual override, you can pick your own gears using either the lever or the small metal paddles affixed to the back of the wheel, which feel great but can be hard to find during turns. In automatic mode or under hard acceleration, it snaps off shifts like rifle fire; driving sedately in manual mode, there can be a pause between toggling the shift paddle and the desired effect, but the gap is short enough to effectively be a non-issue.</p>

<p>Slightly more annoying than the transmission’s quirks is the tendency of the quite exhaust pipes to burp quite loudly on every upshift. While it certainly adds a welcomed sense of <em>fuck yeah!</em> during hard-charging acceleration, it can grow a little tiresome while tooling around town. A system that restricts the belching to hard-core acceleration would certainly be appreciated.</p>
<p>Still, there’s little to complain about in regards to the car’s performance. Acceleration runs towards the back of the sport roadster class – not surprising, as the TT-S is quite a bit less powerful than competitors like the Porsche Boxster S, the awkwardly named BMW Z4 sDrive35i, or even the Chevrolet Corvette convertible. However, unless you’ve got the car’s competitors at hand for direct comparison, you’ll only be disappointed with the TT-S’s acceleration if you’re trading down from a Ferrari.</p>
<p>To access that power, though, you’ll have to punch through some turbo lag early on. Below 3000 rpm, the four-cylinder feels a touch anemic; once past that point, though, things stay interesting all the way up to the redline. Still, driving around New York City, I often found myself dropping a gear in order to keep up with traffic. (Then again, if all you need to deal with traffic in New York is a downshift, consider yourself lucky. I usually need something in a 12-gauge Remington.)</p>

<p>Plus, when the roads start winding, the Audi grabs hold like an angry cat on carpet. Compact car or not, the Rabbit/Golf’s capable handling has often been celebrated, and the lowered ride height and AWD of the Audi only add to it. Should you desire, you can turn cloverleafs into G-force simulators with relative ease (but make sure your soda lid is screwed on tight).</p>
<p>Unfortunately, all that performance makes for quite a bit of temptation, and even if you’re lucky enough to avoid speeding tickets (good luck with that), playing with this Audi can cost you at the pump. The EPA estimates fuel economy at 21 city/29 highway; however, achieving the higher figure likely requires driving with the top up at 55 miles per hour, and if you’re driving your TT-S like that, you should just pull over and give the car to the nearest teenager. My tester’s low fuel light popped on after just 330 miles.</p>
<p>Inside, the TT-S boasts the same sort of quality seen all along the Audi line. You sit low in the car, with the high doors creating a mild case of “bathtub effect.” In keeping with the nature of the car, sporty touches abound, from the snug seats to the metallic finish on the shift lever and paddles and the thick, flat-bottomed steering wheel similar to the one in the Lamborghini Gallardo. (Lamborghini, like Audi, is owned by the Volkswagen Group – along with Bentley, Bugatti, and a host of European carmakers American audiences have probably never heard of.)</p>

<p>Of course, no matter how committed you are to soaking up the sun &#8211; or in the case of Irish people like myself, risking melanoma &#8211; eventually some sort of event will occur (thunderstorm, hole in the ozone layer, Mothman attack) that will cause you to raise the top. Thankfully, the TT-S makes it easy; press and hold one button, and the top will rise or fall as you desire, even while driving at low speeds. While power hard tops have come into vogue in the last several years, the TT-S doesn’t suffer for choosing canvas over metal; the top boasts a glass rear window, feels nearly as strong as a hard one, and was just as effective at keeping warmth in and noise out.</p>
<p><strong>The Bottom Line:</strong> From its humble roots in the Volkswagen family, the TT-S has grown into a genuine sports car. While it may lack the mid-mounted engines or hefty V-8s of other roadsters, the little Audi still kicks ass and takes names while making you feel like an action hero. Sure, it’s not the perfect convertible for everyone – there are faster roadsters, more convenient roadsters, flashier roadsters and cheaper roadsters &#8211; but the TT-S strikes a nice balance between value, size and style. Lay your eyes on one, and it’s hard to look away; drop the top, crank up your favorite Foo Fighters song and floor it through a couple of gears, and you’ll be hooked.</p>

<p>For car enthusiasts, the Frankfurt Motor Show tends to be one of the more consequential events of the year. Not only does it segue nicely into Oktoberfest, but it&#8217;s usually home to dozens of palpitation-causing model revelations. (Though that might actually be caused by all that <em>wurst</em>.)</p>
<p>Blissfully, this year&#8217;s show was no exception, with quite a few exciting cars showing their front fascias (fasciae?) for the first time. Sadly, due to the sagging economy, we were unable to send any correspondents to Germany this year, but we&#8217;ve still prepared a recap of this year&#8217;s highlights for your viewing pleasure, divided up into appropriate categories.</p>
<p><strong>SUPREME SEDANS:</strong></p>
<p><strong>2010 Aston Martin Rapide</strong></p>
<p>After years of waiting and teasing, Aston Martin finally went public with all the details about its sleek sedan &#8211; or &#8220;four-door sports car,&#8221; as they prefer to call it. We don&#8217;t really care what they call it &#8211; so long as they let us stare at it. Thankfully, the sports car maker&#8217;s attempt at domestication hasn&#8217;t resulted in any loss of attractiveness; like a six-foot-three supermodel, all that extra length just means you have to look at it longer.</p>

<p>Motivation comes from the same 6.0 liter, 470-horsepower V12 motivating the DB9 on which it&#8217;s based, connected to a six-speed automatic. No word yet on whether Aston will see fit to bring out a more aggressive model based on the DBS at some point, but it wouldn&#8217;t be too surprising.</p>

<p>Pricing hasn&#8217;t been announced, but expect something in the $200,000 range &#8211; about $60-$100K more than its direct &#8220;competitors,&#8221; the Porsche Panamera Turbo and Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG. But odds are if you&#8217;re in the market for a six-figure sedan that performs like a supercar and prefer the looks of the Aston Martin, you can swing the difference.</p>
<p><strong>2011 Bentley Mulsanne</strong></p>
<p>After taking the wraps off its new flagship at the Pebble Beach Concours D&#8217;Elegance last month, Bentley officially unveiled the Mulsanne in all its glory at Frankfurt &#8211; and it&#8217;s pretty freakin&#8217; glorious.</p>

<p>Power comes from a 6.75 liter turbocharged V8 (presumably the same basic one motivating Bentleys for half a century), putting out 505 horses and 725 lb-ft of torque. All that twist heads to the rear wheels via an eight-speed automatic &#8211; and no, there&#8217;s no good reason why a car with as much torque as a Mack truck needs eight forward speeds.</p>

<p>Bentley says the Mulsanne will also come with a variety of 21st century features, such as Bluetooth, sat-nav, MP3 player hookup, and a 6-disc CD changer. Of course, if all you wanted were those features and leather seats, you could save yourself in the range of $275,000 and buy a loaded Mazda3 &#8211; but where&#8217;s the fun in that?</p>
<p><strong>2011 Rolls-Royce Ghost</strong></p>
<p>If there&#8217;s a new Bentley, a new Rolls-Royce probably isn&#8217;t too far behind. (After all, Kanye and Fiddy can&#8217;t both be rolling in the same whips, can they?) However, the Ghost and the Mulsanne aren&#8217;t direct competitors &#8211; the big Bentley stacks up against the heftier Rolls-Royce Phantom, while the Ghost is a &#8220;discount&#8221; model aimed at the &#8220;cheap&#8221; Bentley Continental.</p>

<p>Of course, cheap is a relative term &#8211; the Rolls will retail for around $245,000 when it hits the States next year. Sure, that&#8217;s almost $75,000 more than the Conti, but that&#8217;s not too much to ask for a little brand loyalty, is it?</p>

<p>Like the Continental, the Ghost is also based on a less expensive vehicle from its corporate master&#8217;s stable. The Continental shares many of its unseen bits with the Volkswagen Phaeton luxury sedan (remember that car? Well, no one else does, either.); the Ghost, in turn, shares a platform with the new BMW 7-series. Motivation comes from a slightly uprated version of the BMW 760Li&#8217;s powertrain &#8211; the Roller pumps out 563 horsepower from a 6.0 liter turbocharged V12, through yet another eight-speed automatic. Prudent buyers will probably pick the far cheaper Bimmer&#8230;but Rolls-Royces have never been about prudence.</p>
<p><strong>Bugatti 16 C Galibier</strong></p>
<p>While the Galibier wasn&#8217;t actually featured at Frankfurt &#8211; it was unveiled at the company&#8217;s headquarters in Molsheim, France &#8211; it deserves inclusion in this list because of its mind-boggling magnificence.</p>

<p>The hatchback sedan concept looks more or less like the offspring of a Porsche Panamera and a Bugatti Veyron, and given its supercharged 8.0 liter W16 engine and all-wheel-drive, presumably performs that way as well.</p>

<p>While Bugatti officially has only said the Galibier is  one of several concepts for the next Bugatti road car;however, <em>AutoExpress</em> claims it has been approved for production, and should start rolling out in 2013.</p>

<p>Should the Galibier go into production, expect around 800 horsepower, an eight-speed dual clutch gearbox and a pricetag of about $1,400,000 &#8211; meaning the average Goldman Sachs employee will have to save up slightly more than <em>two whole years&#8217; worth</em> of bonuses to buy one.</p>
<p><strong>CLEAN LUXURY:</strong></p>
<p><strong>2010 BMW X6 Active Hybrid</strong></p>
<p>BMW dropped the production version of its high-end hybrid SUV at Frankfurt this year, which should be going on sale here soon.</p>

<p>The 2010 X6 ActiveHybrid (as opposed to the PassiveHybrid line, which mostly sits around in the driveway eating potato chips and watching <em>The Bonnie Hunt Show</em>) is strapped for performance, with two electric motors added onto its already hearty 4.4 liter turbocharged V8. BMW quotes total combined output at 480 horsepower and 575 lb-ft of torque &#8211; not too far from the balls-to-the-wall X6 M. However, the X6 M can&#8217;t claim to travel at up to 37 mph without using a drop of gasoline, unless it&#8217;s being pushed by a <em>T.rex</em>.</p>
<p>BMW says the hybrid X6 does 0-60 in 5.4 seconds and tops out at 130 mph, while still using 20 percent less gas than the regular V8 model. If they deliver on these promises without hurting the X6&#8217;s playful performance characteristics or jacking the price up too much, I doubt anyone will want to buy the regular old X6 xDrive 50i.</p>
<p><strong>Mercedes-Benz Vision S500 Plug-In HYBRID concept</strong></p>
<p>Equipped with the sort of obscenely long name currently in favor with German luxury automakers, the plug-in S500 remains merely a concept &#8211; for the moment. Mercedes-Benz engineers say the technology is being prepped for production sometime in the near future.</p>

<p>The S500 Plug-In doesn&#8217;t operate quite like the famous Chevy Volt; in the Benz, the gasoline engine still powers the wheels directly, instead of simply recharging the battery. Still, by plugging the battery into an outlet, it can store up enough juice to run the S-class for a whopping 19 miles before the 3.5 liter V6 kicks in.</p>
<p>Mercedes estimates combined fuel economy at 74 miles per gallon, though as with many hybrids today, eking that out could prove harder than squeezing sanity from Glenn Beck. Still, if a production model can achieve even 50 mpg while still cranking out a 5.5 second 0-60 time, Mercedes will have a winner on its hands. (But can we get at least 30 miles out of that battery, guys?)</p>
<p><strong>LEAN, GREEN, FAST MACHINES:</strong></p>
<p><strong>Audi e-tron</strong></p>
<p>Do you like the Audi R8, but want to take the metaphorical Beano and say goodbye to gas? Then feast your eyes on the electric-powered e-tron concept, based off Audi&#8217;s sweet supercar.</p>

<p>According to Audi, the concept packs four electric motors punching out 313 horsepower and an unfathomable 3,319 lb-ft of torque. Of course, you can&#8217;t use all that twist at once &#8211; it would probably send the wheels flying across the continent &#8211; but it sounds cool. Audi also claims a 4.8 second 0-60 time, a top speed of 124 mph and a range of 154 miles&#8230;but not if you&#8217;re going 124 mph.</p>

<p>Of course, those figures are pretty academic, as Audi hasn&#8217;t announced any definite production plans for the e-tron. Of course, if Mercedes-Benz&#8217;s electric-drive SLS proves successful, don&#8217;t be surprised to see an electric R8 sailing silently past the gas pumps within four years.</p>

<p><strong>BMW Vision Efficient Dynamics Concept</strong></p>
<p>Not content to just slap an electric motor in a pre-exising car, BMW instead toted out a brand-new concept designed to showcase what a fuel-efficient supercar of the near future could look like.</p>

<p>According to BMW, the ED (<em>snicker</em>) gets its power from the unification of a 163-hp, 1.5-liter turbodiesel and a pair of electric motors, creating a maximum output of 356 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque. Lightweight design (is that why there are no doors?) helps the ED scoot to 60 in 4.8 seconds, while achieving the usual Bimmer top speed of 155 mph.</p>

<p>Fuel economy is reportedly estimated at 63 mpg, with 31 miles of electric-only driving possible. While a  production version is pretty unlikely, some of the fuel-saving technology seen here will probably show up on the rumored &#8220;Z10&#8243; supercar that&#8217;ll hopefully be coming our way in a couple of years; however, that car will reportedly run a twin-turbo 3.0 liter inline six making 450 horsepower (awesome).</p>
<p><strong>SPEEDING BULLETS:</strong></p>
<p><strong>Ferrari 458 Italia</strong></p>
<p>We&#8217;ve featured the Italia here on the site several times before, but since it was officially revealed at Frankfurt, it only seemed appropriate to look at it one more time.</p>

<p>Replacement for the F430 and heir to Ferrari&#8217;s long line of mid-engined V8 sports cars, the 458&#8217;s 4.5 liter V8 makes 570 horsepower and 398 lb-ft of torque, and sends it to the rear wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. 0-60 comes in 3.4 seconds (probably less &#8211; Ferrari tends to be conservative), top speed is 202 mph, and combined fuel economy on the European cycle comes to 18 mpg. Pricing hasn&#8217;t been announced, but if you go into your Ferrari dealership with $300,000 in cash, you&#8217;ll probably be able to buy a baseball cap or two as well.</p>

<p><strong>Lamborghini Reventon Roadster</strong></p>
<p>Likewise, the Reventon is no stranger to this site (it&#8217;s the car in our headline banner), but it&#8217;s always worth taking another look at &#8211; especially when a new version comes out.</p>

<p>Mechanically and physically, the roadster is pretty much the same as the coupe &#8211; 6.5 liter V12, 660 horses, 487 lb-ft of torque, six-speed sequential manual transmission, outlandishly gorgeous styling. The only real difference is the lack of a top and the increased rarity &#8211; Lambo will be making a mere 15 roadsters, as opposed to a bountiful production run of 20 for the coupe. As Lamborghini itself proudly boasts, the odds of owning a Reventon Roadster are 1 in 700 million; however, at $1.6 million a pop, the odds of getting laid in the passenger&#8217;s seat are about 1 in 2.</p>

<p><strong>Mercedes-Benz SLS</strong></p>
<p>Again, we&#8217;ve already shown you the SLS here on CCO, but since it too received a public unveiling at Frankfurt, we thought we&#8217;d take another look at it (even though it hurts our eyes to do so).</p>
<p>Packing a 571-horsepower version of AMG&#8217;s 6.3 liter V8 running through a seven-speed transmission, the SLS blasts from 0 to 60 in 3.8 seconds and tops out at 197 mph. When it goes on sale sometime next year, expect to pay around $175,000 before any options &#8211; slotting it neatly between the Audi R8/Porsche 911 Turbo and the Lamborghini Gallardo/Ferrari 458 Italia.</p>

<p>Reportedly, the SLS is a blast to drive, capable of holding its own with any of the aforementioned competitors; hopefully the looks improve in person, as well, because it really doesn&#8217;t look too good in those pictures. But at the very least when you&#8217;re inside, you won&#8217;t have to look at the car&#8217;s ass&#8230;</p>
<p><strong>GETTING BETTER ALL THE TIME:</strong></p>
<p><strong>Mini Coupe/Roadster</strong></p>
<p>Now, at first, you might wonder why Mini would be building these cars. After all, doesn&#8217;t the Mini already only have two doors&#8230;and isn&#8217;t there already a convertible?</p>

<p>However, you would be thinking rationally. If so, you&#8217;re not who Mini&#8217;s looking for for these two. Go buy a Clubman. No, these are for the drivers who take their Minis to the max.</p>
<p>[<em>Ed: Really? Are you kidding me? That's the best you can do?</em>]</p>
<p>Shut up, Ed. You try writing this on seven Red Bulls. Anyway, the Mini Coupe will reportedly hit the streets with the turbocharged 208-hp 1.6 liter inline-four from the John Cooper Works Mini, while the Roadster plays it a bit lighter with a 175-horsepower 1.6 liter turbo four. You should be able to buy them in early 2011.</p>

<p><strong>2010 Porsche 911</strong></p>
<p>Ah, 911. Tragic connotations aside, those numbers will always have a special meaning for car enthusiasts. For more than 40 years, the penultimate rear-engine sports car has been undergoing constant evolution, and this year&#8217;s Frankfurt Motor Show gave Porsche a chance to show off their latest subspecies. Both cost about the same, and both share an engine &#8211; but they&#8217;re aimed at different people, for sure.</p>
<p>For those who only feel alive on a racetrack, there&#8217;s the 911 GT3 RS, a 450-horsepower naturally aspirated race-ready RWD machine that&#8217;s so plugged into you, you&#8217;d swear it has one of those neck plugs from <em>The Matrix</em>. 0 to 60 in 3.8 seconds, top speed 194 mph, and a price of $132,800.</p>

<p>But if you need something you can drive to work every day, the new 911 Turbo offers a turbocharged 500 horsepower 3.8 liter flat six. All-wheel-drive means improved traction in all conditions, and there&#8217;s even a new seven-speed dual-clutch transmission for those too lazy to row the gears themselves. 60 mph comes in a stunning 3.2 seconds, and top speed is 194 mph as well. The coupe also starts at $132,800, while the convertible starts at $143,800.</p>

<p><strong>BMW 5-series GT</strong></p>
<p>Wrapping things up for our Frankfurt Show coverage is BMW&#8217;s wagonoid, the 5-series GT. Not as roomy as a station wagon&#8230;not as tall as an SUV&#8230;and not as svelte as a sedan, this hatchagon sacrifices the bitch seat in back to offer prime seating for four. In addition, the rear hatch can open in two ways &#8211; the trunk lid alone can open, or the whole hatch can go up, too.</p>

<p>The GT comes in 535 and 550 forms, offering a 306-hp twin turbo 3.0 liter I6 in the former and a 407-hp 4.4 liter twin-turbo V8 in the latter. An eight-speed auto provides the motivation; rear wheel drive is standard, AWD optional. And while it may seem a bit odd in pictures, we&#8217;re willing to bet it&#8217;ll prove a surprisingly convenient all-weather all-task vehicle.</p>
